How will you find the physician fee schedule on the CMS website?
Well, if you talk to any coder about the work challenges she encounters every day, and she is almost sure to mention the CMS web site – with assorted payer web sites also mentioned in the conversation. You can say it’s as easy as ‘1, 2, 3? … 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 …
At the recently-concluded 2010 Billing & Collections Update Conference in Orlando, Jill Young taught a class about the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. She started off with where to even find the darn thing. Unexpectedly, it was standing room only in her can’t-miss session.

But if you were not lucky enough to hear Young speak at the Orlando conference and missed out on a lot of medical coding career information, don’t lose heart. Here is a small portion of her coding lessons as she takes us through CMS’s crazed Internet maze to the Holy Grail that is the MPFS. And then, what exactly to do with it when you get there.
• As the first step, go to the CMS web site.
• Then, click on ‘Medicare’ in the upper left corner.
• In the third step, scroll down on the home page until you see the ‘Medicare Fee for Service Payment’ section. The link to the Physician Fee Schedule is below that heading.
• After reaching here, you need to go to ‘PFS Relative Value Files.
