2010 CPT: Bid your old MPI codes goodbye

With effect from January 1, 2010 you should use 2010 CPT codes because if you report inactive codes, chances are you may invite denials.

So if you are struggling over whether to report myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) add-on codes for wall motion and ejection fraction (EF), worry not. From January 1, you can bid that problem goodbye as CPT 2010 deletes MPI codes and replaces them with new codes that are appropriate. It seems CPT is trying to eliminate the use of multiple codes to describe procedures that are normally performed in one session.

CPT 2010 deletes 78460-78465 -- Myocardial perfusion imaging . . . ; +78478 -- Myocardial perfusion study with wall motion, qualitative or quantitative study (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure) and * +78480 -- Myocardial perfusion study with ejection fraction (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure).

Instead you'll have to turn to a new set of myocardial perfusion imaging codes.

* 78451, * 78452, * 78453, * 78454

Word of caution: Changes will affect 78481 and 78483, too

+78478 and +78480 are out but there are two more codes that you may have previously used that you need to stay away from. As 78451- 78454 include ejection fraction by first pass, you should stay away from reporting this service separately using 78481 or 78483.
